The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine* is located on a 10-acre campus in Kaka’ako, Honolulu, Hawaii. The $150 million complex was designed by the Honolulu-based architecture firm AHL, and was completed in 2005.

Design assistance and general contracting services were provided for the construction of 507,651 SF School of Medicine. The project consisted of a state-of-the-art research laboratory building and an education and administration building complemented by a childcare center, fitness center and a central mechanical plant building.

The School of Medicine facility earned LEED Certification for diverting at least 75% of all construction waste away from landfills, using low-emitting materials throughout, and more. A cold seawater well system was also included for central cooling and to reduce potable water consumption.

The research building provided 185,868 SF of biomedical research laboratories, offices, support spaces and an animal facility. The education and administration building offers a cutting-edge teaching environment with 114,534 SF in faculty and staff offices, classrooms, a patient simulation center, a learning resource center, an auditorium and lecture hall, a library, a bookstore and a café. The facility features the latest in information technology to enable remote learning, video conferencing and wireless network access.

This project received several awards. Most notable were:

  • NAIOP Kukulu Hale Award, New Public/Government, Project of the Year
  • GCA Build Hawai‘i, Award of Excellence
  • Hawaiian Cement, Concrete Achievement Award
  • ASID Award of Merit
  • LEED Certified, U.S. Green Building Council
